in my ground-sleeping days my favorite option was Exped's inflatable pillow, which still works well in the hammock but only when it's minimally inflated. it has a nice indention in the middle and a notch on the front edge, which both work to cradle the head pretty well.

I use the pillow the kiddos used in their crib/daybed when they were a bit older ... they're now 5 and 10, so they didn't mind daddy stealing it for hanging purposes.

I will ever be on the lookout for the perfect pillow. I backpack, so anything over a few oz is out. I find that the back of my head hurts without one, and I also need neck support. The "U" shaped travel pillows choke me. Right now I use a disposable inflatable pillow. Thinking of making a dogbone shaped pillow with foam pieces salvaged from another pillow..

I have always used my fleece sweater rolled up as a pillow, even while camping (shudder) on the ground. I always camp with a fleece no matter the weather so always have a pillow.

Hanging inside I use, like, 3 pillows (one of those squishy pillows under the head, a full size pillow under the knees, and another one that just kinda floats around where I want it) Out on the trail though I have fun improvising. Rain jackets, the foam pad that acts as back support from my pack, stuff sacks filled with whatever (gear, clothes, other stuff sacks, leaves, scared squirrels, etc...)

I've recently used a LuminAid lantern as a pillow:

It's a great lantern to have, and it's a great pillow too. The plastic has a softer feel than you would imagine - the "frosted" look makes it nicer to put against skin than clear plastic. Great size to put under the neck.

I have to have a pillow. I use a nemo fillo pillow I've had it for a couple of years now & love it. Look them up on YouTube. There fully adjustable to fit just about any scenario. Everyone who has tested mine out goes and buys one. It Packs very small.
