Canada Killareny Looking o do a hiking trip to Silver Peak

Hey guys, well I have been hammocking here and there but nothing serious. Well, I have decided to go for something a bit more. I am looking at doing a 4 day, 3 night hike from somewhere in Killareny to Silver Peak. Does any have any tips for trip planning? I have never been there and doing a solo hike. I don't know where to park my car or where the best place to enter the park to get to the peak would be. I have emailed the local outfitters but have not heard back. Any info will help.

    Thanks Guys and Gals

    Chris from Niagara Falls Ont.

Easiest would be from George Lake (where you would pick up permits) or save a few km and hike in from the Crack parking on hwy 637. Not really much other way to do it without canoeing in.

If you haven't seen it already, jeffs maps have a killarney map online (and available for purchase) which should help. It has campsites, elevations and rough hiking times.
    http://www.thekillarneymap.com/

I'd also suggest booking early. There aren't many backpacking campsites and its a popular destination.

p.s. A quick warning to be prepared fitness wise. There's a fair bit of up and down on the route.

Keg, do you suggest hiking in or canoeing in?

They are both good. The hike up the Crack on the way to Silver is pretty worthwhile. I've hiked the peak as a break from the portage at David lake but you could do a pretty easy paddle starting at Bell lake (and do the Crack as a day hike if you want).

Both canoeing in or hiking are good options depending what you are looking for. Canoe would be easier - could do it in 1 day if you wanted to (and might be easier to book) but the harder hike might make the experience more rewarding.

Did the trail last year solo and it is deff worth doing. Do note that there will be all kinds of up and down and in some sections that would be almost strait up and down.

Take a look at Jeff's maps website for Killarney. He has his maps available online and also give approximate times and distances for hiking it along with high and low hights along the trail. I found that for myself the times listed were fairly accurate

I will be doings silver peak as a 3 day canoe trip the first week of August and can tell you at getting camp sites that would work was a real issue as all of the ones around silver peak were almost full at the beginning of the month and that was when I booked a couple of months ago

Well guys and gals, we just got back yesterday and the trip was amazing. I don't have a lot of pictures but I have a few. I would recommend sites H51 and H47 for sure. I do no recommend H50 or H46! Also, if you plan to start at the George Lake Gate, don't make site H47 your first site if you are wearing 40 lbs of gear. Going counter clockwise on the trail is very hard and very challenging.
    The started cloudy and rainy.

We started hiking and it was bug infested for 6km until we came to the "Crack". This whole section just seemed to be hand over hand.

After about 7 or 8 more peaks of up and down,

We finally got to site H47. Time to relax, start a fire, get the hiking shoes off and set up camp. I had my HH and a hex tarp, my buddy is still a ground sleeper.

The next day, we hiked to Silver Peak and back. We stopped off at H46, the site we were going to be at and it had a lot of shade, was buggy and had a lot of bear poop. O we went back to H47 and nobody was there.
The next day we hiked to H50 and it was the same as H46. So we pushed onto H51 and found a beautiful place...

The next morning, we trekked the last 2 hours out to the car. We then headed to Sudbury, got a room at the holiday inn, showered, ate at Fionn Macools twice, and slept. The next morning, we drove back to Niagara Falls.
It was a challenge, I had a lot of pain in my knee, but everything worked out. Thanks to Kilarney Outfitter for planning the trip for us and letting us camp overnight after our long drive up. They also helped us with low air pressure in our car tire!!!

Looks like you had a great time. Thanks for sharing. Every time I see someone's trip report from that trail I get jealous. My plans to complete the entire loop keep getting pushed to "next year". Sigh ... there is always next year.

    Cheers

I tend to do most of my camping on crown (government) land but if i have to camp in a park, Killarney is my first choice!
