Dang, I was just about to try bashing all these baby seals and harvesting the fat in an attempt to make some uber-ultralight fat-nylon

One factor to consider in this quest is the amount of fabric you will need. While a 10 X 10 tarp (simply for example) has a set square area not all fabrics will be efficient for that purpose/size. One advantage that nylon has is the width which is typically 60 - 62". A nominal 10 x 10 will need two panels. Natural fibers are typically only 48 - 54" with silk sometimes as narrow as 36". That means more panels being needed to make the 10 x 10 size. Granted different sizes can be done efficiently, but that assumes you are willing to reduce the size of the tarp you are wanting to build. When fabric costs are based on running yards rather than square yards the width can make a significant difference in total cost. Again, I am not discouraging the quest. Just wanting to make sure you have all your ducks in row as you make your comparisons.

Aside from cuben here is a good look at the available alternatives:

This is a more compact description without the colors:

Have you ever seen a tarp made of Spinnaker material. It seems to have disappeared from the tarp makers offerings. If I remember correctly, they were starting to get bad quality production material. Lucky I grabbed a used tarp for sale here!
