$5 hammock (kids) - from Five Below

I saw these at Five Below and decided to get one to see if it is worth it: http://www.fivebelow.com/75-hammock.html

I am probably going to use it as a gear hammock or for our 4 year old (though I will probably just make him one). It is tiny and rated to 200 lbs. With the ends gathered it is about 72" long and 33" wide.

Here are some pics, along with my DIY UQ for size comparison.

Looks about the right size for gear.

If you buy 4 and sew them 2 x 2, you will have a decent sized hammock for $20!

What's the weight? I agree, gear hammock only (unless you have a 10-year old camping with you), but $5 might be worthwhile.

    Thanks!

Could work as just a seat hammock to throw in the camelback pack for day hikes or mountain biking??

hmm interesting didnt think of that, but for the weight/packability why not just a normal sized hammock?

It is definitely lighter and packs smaller than any of my other hammocks. I don't have a scale that would accurately measure the weight, but the system could be significantly lightened by removing the metal hooks. I think it will be perfect for the kids to have in their packs on day hikes. I haven't put them in it yet, but I think it is too small for my 7 or my 10 yo to sleep in. I'll set it up when I get the chance and then post some pics.

Hung one in the back yard yesterday. It is way too small for any long term use except for a child maybe. But for a seat on a day hike it just might work. If you remove the stuff sack and compress it into a small ziplock it will be softball or less size. Size and weight makes it useful for gear storage also.

the seams under your body would most likely bust. and at that price why not just make one from scratch? it would be even less sewing.
