Hey scott,How did the underquilt not work well? Did it not insulate properly? Did it not hold close enough to your hammock? Ill fitting? Just gotta know what went wrong there first
Dale Gribble: I'm thinking, "new hammock." For me, laying and swaying in a hammock is like a steady morphine drip without the risk of renal failure.
Randy : yea but just remember yer roots and where ya come from....you got Hennessy in yer blood son......
Many of us are big fans of UQs. Plenty of folks use pads. Either way, we'll need more information about your DIY UQ: how did you make it (design), materials, how did you suspend it, what does "not work so well mean" exactly (e.g. it was OK for a while, then it got too cold...or it didn't work at all, etc)?
UQ can be tricky to setup at first. Design is important. So tell us about yours.
i used a sheet folded in half then whipped the ends it fell apart and did not want to go back together

I started with a pad until I could afford an underquilt. The first couple of nights I struggled with getting the suspension dialed in to avoid drafts. Once I did get it dialed in I have slept so much better with the underquilt. I will still use a pad with my underquilt if I am camping down into the single digits because my quilts only go to 20 degrees. You may want to have someone else help you adjust your underquilt as you lay in the hammock. They are able to see the gaps that you can't see while in the hammock.
There are several effective DIY Under Quilt ideas here at Hammock Forums, some are fairly simple to make out of rectangular sleeping bags or military quilts and even common bed quilts with bungee like sock cord as a suspension system to hold it up to the bottom of the hammock here is a popular one. There are many variations to it. Use google, bing or the HF search tool to look for more ideas.

If you are not fairly good at using a sewing machine and want a very light weight, highly compressible UQ then it may be best to buy one.
