So are there any opinions on the minimum width of a hammock? I bought some materiel from WW that is 47in wide. Do I need to add additional material to fill it out to 60in which seems to be what everyone is using?
Thanks!

47" is on the narrow side, but you may find you like it. I prefer a narrow hammock for warm weather afternoon lounging, instead of a bunch of floppy fabric blocking the breeze.

The inside apex of the Steamliner's Cat cuts are 52". That would make a static 47" tough to get a good asym lay IMO. Extentions to the tub of a hammock, be it either length or width are usually not advised.
Kid's hammock, Pet or Gear hammock, UQ protector or Sock, 47" width would give you plenty to work with on those projects.

47" would be a little tight if you are close to 6' tall. I used a GT UL that was 54" and it was just too narrow for comfortable camping. Lounging around in the backyard it was fine.
For a child or person of less altitude that may be fine.
Claytor hammocks are 48" wide, and quite a few have been happy with them.
you could build a bridge.

just don't sit on that side- use it for the foot side.
