The Grand Trunk Nano 7 is 48" wide (and 9' long) . taller users have expressed difficulty in getting a comfortable lay is such a small hammock. I have a GT UL which is 9'6" x 4'6" and I can just about get a reasonable lay and I'm 5'6" . I think length is probably more important for getting a more comfortable lay. I'm intrigued by and intend to try an extreme parallelogram gathered end to see if that really provides a "better" lay.

I have a 60" wide whipped end hammock, which is comfortable enough for me (I'm 6' 2"). If you're worried about the flop, you could extend it and add knotty mods, basically shock cord along part of the edges to gather the slack. I just ordered a 90"x156" tablecloth and some shock cord for a (hopefully ) full time sleeping hammock. I would say that for sleeping, you want enough width to lay fairly diagonal, maybe up to 45° from the Ridgeline, which therefore depends on how tall you are. If you want to lounge, or don't mind sleeping as a banana, 47" should be just fine. But just experiment with what's most comfortable for you. It's personal preference.

My old ENO hammock is constructed with an extra strip on each side.

quite ill advised. if yer gonna sew strips on to make it wider, do so only on the foot side, and dont sit on that side. (it should be the side against you back when sitting)

I thought they did it just for the additional weight penalty.

^I've always wondered if it was to create a point of failure, so that the user finds himself in sudden need of a NEW eno hammock XD (not to mention their lousy rope, but I won't get into that). As for the width, it's entirely personal preference. 48 is not really TOO narrow, it's just not ideal for sprawling.

So step 1 was to create a hammock from the 47 in wide material. So 12 feet of material later and we have my first test hammock.

It's actually not bad, but for me too much shoulder squeeze... But my better half likes it..
