    Second Rain shower test

I have a HH expedition and love it. The first shower i tested the fly i had it attached to the stock ropes and it went a little slack when I got in. It wasn't a problem because it wasn't that bad. I just put it up with a separate ridge line and while it took a little more adjustment time the fly worked so much better to a major rain storm.

My question is this: What kind of ridgeline system do you use for the fly? I know the v style tying each end to the string with no major line running under the fly... I am partial to this method although I haven't tried it and have no idea how much rope I am going to need to do it adequately.

I have also deduced that while yes the stock tarp works the Hex is going to be so much nicer and versatile especially for a porch set up.

I use a Zing-it 1.75 mm continuos ridgeline with Dutch hook and Dutch Tarp Flyz or Wasp like this:

A lot of people go with 30 ft. length but I like 35 ft. I'm not even sure what problem the V-style hang addresses, but it's a problem I don't have. I always run the ridgeline over the tarp, not under.

The stock Hennessy tarp on the Expedition is a joke for anything but straight down rain. Any blowing precipitation and you're gonna get wet.

Better question: what does running the ridgeline under do for the fly? Abrade and wear down the material. All the Hennessy tarps appear to have somewhat of a catenary cut on the ridgeline which allows a tighter pitch. The only time you need to run the ridgeline under the tarp is with a straight-cut ridgeline.

Some folks says they like the ridgeline under the tarp so they can hang stuff from it. However, if you're gonna hang stuff from the tarp ridgeline you've now made it a weight-bearing apparatus and should probably use tree straps to keep from harming the tree.
