What purpose do the soft shackles serve in that setup?
If the tree huggers end up covered in sap, they can be easily removed and packed separately.

Thats how I do it. If I have a short hang between trees, I run my whoopie through the tree strap then back to the hammock and use the soft shackle as a carabiner to attach it at the continuous loop.its kinda extra on a normal hang, but lightweight insurance to guarantee a hang.
So its all good than?
Know you have me second guessing myself.
Why is that? It sounds like it all held fast during your test hang. Did you make your own? If so what instructions did you follow? And, how did it seem to go for you?
A little uneasiness is totally normal when testing a new setup, especially in the beginning of the big learning curve. Do your research, go slow, test, proceed: things you seem be doing. Your confidence will grow with your overall experience with your gear, as well as many of those same/similar experiences being echoed here on the forums.
I use tree huggers connected to whoopies with a loop to loop connection. Never had a problem with sap. One thing good about it is the huggers I have are short and if they don't go all the way around the tree, the whoopie makes up the difference. I wouldn't put a soft shackle in the middle of that. The whoopie connects to the hammock on an Oz. 'biner on a dog-boned gather.
I keep the suspension in a little bag of it's own, so if there is any sap, it doesn't get on anything else, but there never is much.
