MD -- Hanging in State Parks

Hey there! I'm looking around at some of the state parks in Maryland, and I was curious to their stance towards hanging, and if they allow it, any rules. I tried searching on their state park's website but haven't found anything yet.

Thanks in advance for the info...

I don't know if it an overall policy but when I have camped at Cunningham Falls SP they where pretty armament about nothing hanging from the trees and staying on the tent pads.

MD -- Hanging in State Parks

I don't believe that there's an official stance. It seems to vary from park to park from what I can tell. I have never seen anything specifically denying it. I think that some rangers say no due to lack of an actual policy.

REV put this together however MD didn't reply.

I noticed the lack of info on MD in that thread before a recent trip to MD.

I hung at Tuckahoe State Park in May and, given the lack of clear info, set up a tent on the pad as a decoy (just the rainfly of a freestanding tent). When it got dark, I hung the hammock, slept in it, then took it down after I woke. Either no one saw me, or no one cared. On my way out I asked at the park office and was told I'd have to call one of the higher-ups on the park staff about whether or not "camping hammocks" were permitted.

I know that Gambrill State Park is partly private property (most of the Eastern half of the Red Trail before you cross the highway). I haven't had a chance to put up the hammock while on that mountain due to the wife and kid being with me and eager to keep moving along the trails.

No problem with hammocks at Gathland State Park in Maryland. Unless your group consists of over 100 people then they politely ask you to not come back. (Fall MAHHAs outgrew Gathland. Camping areas on the AT.)

I have only stealth camped in my hammock around here. I'd love to hammock in my local park, which is Susquehanna State Park. I don't think I can though, because they are very clear about tents only being on the designated areas... unfortunately those designated areas have been cleared of trees. You'd have to hang off to the side of the site, which is not allowed.

I haven't checked Rocks State Park yet, but I'd like to hang there too.

I'm going to check on a place locally that I inadvertently stumbled upon online. It's in Darlington, called Pines something or other. No real info I could find, but I have GPS coordinates. I'll swing by and see if it's an untapped treasure. Will report back tonight.

EDIT: so, it was a bust. I didn't realize that the GPS coordinates pointed to right behind a house my girlfriend used to rent. I pulled up, and was all "whaaa?" Those coordinates are off.

I'm going to look into Seneca Creek State Park in Gaithersburg.
    Given it's location I'm sure they won't allow hammocks...but it's worth a shot.

I will be in Baltimore this coming weekend. It seems that the state parks are not very welcoming to hammocks. On the other hand, I am new to hammocks, so I might not be able to hang my hammock. Are there any recommendations for a day hike in the vicinity?

Given I will be in northern Baltimore (Stevenson) around six pm on Friday, I will probably look for some good ethnic food and some music in the Baltimore area. However, I was considering a road trip if there was any decent day hikes within a reasonable distance (staying Saturday night) I will return to Baltimore on Sunday afternoon.

Looking for : easy to moderate day hike within a 3-4 hours drive from Baltimore. I would probably stay overnight in a cheap motel or attempt to hang a hammock for the first time on Saturday night.
