    Tarp Design for tandom hammocks

    Hello everyone,

I have been following the forums here for about a year now and have found every answer I could want for my transition to hammock camping until now. I have converted my wife to hammock camping as well but she really wants to hang closer to me. I tried the three tree setup but most places it ended up being too far away for her liking. I am in the process of finishing a hammock setup with spreader bars that we both slept quite comfortably in on the test run. The only problem now is making or modifying a tarp that is big enough to cover both of us and has doors. Does anyone have plans for such a setup or things they have tried? Or tarps that could be modified for such a setup? I was also wondering on how to deal with the dual lines coming in and having doors. I was pondering over slits in the doors with Velcro. Any ideas?

I have successfully hung 3 hammocks under a Chinook 12 x 14 tarp in moderate rain. I did not have it setup in 4-season mode with the doors closed though.

You could easily hang 2 hammocks under it. As for if the doors would close fully or not, I'm not sure. You could invest in a set of Grizz beaks and cover the overlap if you really want fully sealed off 4-season tarp coverage though.

As you can see in the picture which is just 1 hammock strung under it, the doors are heavily overlapping. You could make a much wider A-frame to accommodate 2 hammocks under it and still have the doors touching? Maybe adding some velcro if you really want the ends to be sealed up?

Wow.. That honeymoon suite is really nice. I never seem to end up having three trees line up right to make it work. I end up camping at Eno River State park a lot which requires the hammocks to setup over the tent pad which really limits the tree choice. I like the Chinook's size but wonder if it is slightly too large. I am heading to Hanging Rock state park with lots of gear this weekend to do some test setups and get pictures and measurements. I have our two 9 foot hammocks in tandom, a 11 foot gathered end, a bridge hammock, a warbonnet cloudburt, a eno profly, and two size templates made out of 2 mil painters plastics. So I have lots of options to try thanks to a fellow hammocker at work. I am hoping that once I find a tarp size and style that makes my wife and I happy so I can decide to make it from scratch or modify a tarp. Thanks for the ideas.

This is how my wife and I hang. It is two 10.5 ft hammocks, spreader bars that measure 18 inches, and an OES winter tarp. The tarp has an 11 ft ridge line and doors. I believe it is 10ft wide. Works well in all but the worst weather, in which case she probably won't camp anyways.

Nice Setup. Is that a tent pole used for the spreader bars? Also what are the ends of the spreader bars?

Yup an 18 inch tent pole. I grabbed some plastic pipe T connectors from the hardware store and they fit perfect. The suspension lines run through the t section. In the bottom pic I tried using a combining an 18 inch section with a much shorter section, but there was too much bend. 18 inches keeps us away from each other enough to sleep comfortably, but the wife can still feel close. There is a little movement when one exits and enters but I feel it is about the same as when we would cram into our two person tent and have to exit the middle of the night.
