    Tarp Rigging Question

Hello. I have a question about a rigging setup that I've been kicking around. I'm a noob so take it easy on me .

Would it work to rig a tarp using a spliced loop of lash-it fed around the tree and back through itself with a soft shackle prusik (or similar) attached to the tarp? (I would put one of these on either side.)
This seems like it would be a really light setup that still allowed for a lot of adjustment. All you would need to do would be to pull the tails away from the prusiks to tighten it up.

Thanks in advance for the input.

    Yes, it certainly would work.
You should post detailed picture of you soft-shackle prusik as others would love to use this.
This is probably the lightest way to suspend a tarp without using helium balloons.

Prussics can be problematic IMO. There needs to be a good match in materials for strong holding power. Usually the prussic is smaller in diameter than the cord it is wrapped around. Prussics can also have a hard time gripping on slippery rope like polypropylene. That being said your idea holds promise. It keeps the tarp centered on the tree and allows for easy adjustment and tightening. The free tail would also probably eliminate the need for a drip string. Let us know how it works out!

Welcome to the forum. I have a question on your configuration. Since you would be threading your RL thru the loop then attaching the tarp to the prussic wouldn't that mean you would be removing the tarp from your RL each and every time? That seem like extra steps when a small hook would allow you to keep the RL with the tarp.

It will work just fine. We have been making tarp ridge lines similar to that with prussics as the method of adjustment for over 5 years now. For the smaller 1.75mm sized lines you will need 4 wraps with the prussic to get it to grip solid. Adding a mini carabiner or other small hard wear will allow you to leave it attached to the tarp for a little faster set up and you're talking just a few grams added to the set up weight.

Thank you everyone for the responses thus far.

OutandBack and Mr. Arrowhead... I have a set of Dutch Hooks that I've considered using for just the reasons stated (i.e. simplifying setup and allowing rigging to stay on the tarp). It would eliminate the 'release soft shackle, feed line through loop, reattach soft shackle steps'...

skistrees... Do you have any suggestions on other knots? I'll definitely throw some extra wraps in if I go with prusiks.

That's similar to my tarp set up. I use Dutch hooks for around the tree and my prusiks are just continuous loops larksheaded to the tarp's D-rings.

Many good Tarp hitch ideas for you to test out

Bottom line get out in your backyard or local park and tryout several different methods and see what works best for you. One crazy idea to make tying hitches or prussic with slippery lash-it easier is to remove the outer layer of 550 parachute cord (about 12" or less and seal both ends to prevent fray but leave open) cover dyneema cord with this. Watch video by WarbonnetGuy aka Brandon for his methods of suspending a tarp, hitches to tarp, several good ones.:

There is not just one right way to suspend a tarp, everyone has unique requirements and preferences.

I have been happy using this setup on one side of my ridgeline with a Dutch stinger on the other side for the extra versatility.

I was actually using the OP's method but with outandback's suggestion of a Dutch hook at each tree end. But then I went to Dejoha's continuous ridgeline.
