I'm not sure about what thickness people generally use but Dutch sells 7/64" shock cord. He sells 25' for $4.25 (plus S&H). Click here to check it out. Be careful while you're there because Dutch has a lot of nearly irresistible things.
If you backpack and want to save weight & bulk, 1/16" is fine. Thats what I use for bugnets.
Here's my source for gram weenie 1/16" shockcord.

Mnay of us cottage shops stock some for DIY purposes. 3/32nd is a good all around size for many DIY projects.

Arrowhead, Dutch, DIYgearsupply, Questoutfitters, JrB, SupplyCaptain - can't go wrong with any of them. Avoid ebay cheapies. 3/32" is good size.
I've used stuff from DIY Gear Supply and been happy with it. I also have some SGT Knots 3/32 that I got form Amazon. The smallest that he carries not is 1/8. My 3/32 isn't strong enough to use as suspension for quilts but works well for gathering the sides. The 1/8 may or may not be stronger, but either way it would be find for your bug net. It comes out to $0.106/ft for 250' or $0.077/ft for 500' shipped. I love the cottage venders but sometimes it just comes down to the money I have in my wallet.
I have found the 1/8 inch shock cord at Walmart in the craft section where they paracord stuff is.
