CA, JMT, Section hike Mammoth to Yosemite, 13-20 July

Doing the 60 mile stretch of the John Muir Trail from Reds Meadow north to Yosemite over 8 days. I will try to Hang the whole time, but will carry a ground cloth in case I can't one night.

My permit was for six, but typical churn with this kind of trip meant several bailed, a few added on and I still have a couple of slots. I'm going whatever happens. Wish me luck!

I and three others made the journey and it was awesome. Despite daily afternoon rain and occasional hail it was a great trip.

Take away: Decent trees are hard to come by above 9,500 feet. Above 10k what trees are there are small, stunted and can't support hammocks. I got creative and enjoyed myself, but the high country is a challenge for hammocking.

Good to know. I'm planning a JMT trip next year. Looks like I'll be on the ground.

There are plenty of hanging opportunities on the JMT, especially if you are involved in camp site selection. The passes are higher in elevation if you head in a southern direction and the highest one on Forester Pass (about 13,000 ft.) but there are plenty of nights you can hang in the trees before going up a pass or just after decending one. That said, you might want to prepare for at least a night or two on the ground and be sure to snap a photo in front of the Muir Hut. It is awesome!
Happy Trails to one and all.
Enjoy the outdoors wisely and elevate your perspective.
