Hi HF members, I'm new to this type of outdoor sleeping. I've tried to hang my hammock in the back yard before I take into the wilderness to actually sleep in it. I think I need lots of help.

Welcome to the addiction!
The amount of help you will need depends on your experience in wilderness camping and your willingness to experiment on your own.
How did your backyard experiment turn out? What were you using (hammock, clothing, blanket, sleeping bags, etc...)
For the wilderness you will need (besides other gear for camping): hammock, tarp, bottom insulation, top insulation. There are many ways to skin that cat, we all have our own systems. What works for me doesn't work for others and vice-versa.
Welcome to the forums. Lots of info here. Research and ask questions and you'll be on your way.

Welcome lewt! There is a veritable wealth of knowledge here in hf, and a valuable resource in the trip planning forum. Find your region and look for one local. It will give you an opportunity to check out other gear and ideas from those already out there. Just follow the basics of camping (shelter, insulation, water, and food) and know your skill level before venturing too deep. A lot of hangs are held in campsites for the amenities and ease for those not fond of long treks. This may be a good start, as you can bail if it gets uncomfortable pretty easily. Hopefully this will be the start of a bright and wonderful new chapter in your life.

Greetings from the UK, Lewt. If its info and advice you seek, you've come to the right place. I'd been lurking here for months before I made my first post, soaking up all the accumulated experience and advice of the many VERY clued-up hammockers here. The first thing you'll learn is this - you've started something BIG, lol. Have fun and enjoy
