Anyone used a hammock on the C&O Canal?

Bicycled parts of the C&O Canal a few years ago. Was tenting back then, but looking back it seems like it would be a great biking/hammock trip.
It's considered a National Park so not sure what the rules on using a hammock would be.

Anyone done the C&O with a hammock?

Yes but you will need looooong tree straps. A lot of the campsites the trees are huge and far apart. I use 12' straps with whoopies. Some sites are not desireable because they are cleared for tenting or have the trains nearby.

I like the sites past Hancock towards Paw Paw. Theres a few west of Harpers Ferry that are good.

+1 to what crash said. I've ended up in the weeds next to the camp sites quite a few times to find suitable trees.

If you're biking, you could build a lightweight stand and bring that along. There was a thread about one a few weeks ago that used two 2"x2" poles, but I suspect they could be replaced with something metal, such as the military surplus antenna mast poles used in some turtle dog stand variations. This stand had the advantage of not using a ridge pole, but rather a ridge line on the top, making it easier to transport.

Biked/hiked stretches of it many times. Abundant trees for stealth hanging. Also abundant Poison Ivy.

The C&O is where I first heard of the hammock forums! I've never had an issue finding a place to hang, bring some long straps just to be safe. The campsites are definitely cleared for tents (why wouldn't they be) and sometimes the tent campers are pitched in your ideal spot so that can be a challenge. The guy who told me about hammockforums.net actually asked me to move my tent so he could hang.

Edit: I spent a night at Swain's Lock a couple of weekends ago and we had 3 hammocks in the group.

I've been wondering about this as I wanted a 'low cost' method of getting to the Appalachian trail around Harper Ferry. Thank you for the posting. I'm more confident about taking my hammock along rather than the tiny tent I have.

Thinking of doing this as a hike sometime in the first half of august. (My bike is not suited for the dirt/gravel trail).

Planning a hike next week for sure. Will be walking all the way to harper ferry. The only campsite I wouldn't use is the Marsden campsite since its not free (nearly broke here anyway). I'll try to snap pics and report how good it is hammock wise.
