Any idea's on making a hammock with an integrated tarp/ my winter hammock

I just got 3 yard of ripstop nylon and i want to integrate a tarp in. wondered if anyone had any idea's. I was thinking of installing a permanent web strap as a ridgeline but sew the strap into the tarp and then seal the seams. Has anyone else done this, if not please share any ideas or thought on my design.

Believe me, we (Hammeck) have thought about this idea on end. The biggest concern is tension. In order for the tarp to function optimally, you want it to be pulled taught. If you connect it to your hammock, which often moves when you enter/exit it, you will likely take away tension from the tarp as the hammock sags. We've thought about using tent poles (or something similar) in place of staking out the fly, but have not had the opportunity to play with it. Good luck with your effort!

Thanks, I've thought about that as well and am in the process of figuring out a system of tensioners.

    Tension via prusiks on SRL?
I'm currently thinking of a combo tarp/bug sock with tent poles spreading the sides, which slides along a ridgeline to 'deploy.'

What your talking about is a Hennessy clone or at least style.

Check out Olddog. He uses mule tape for suspension and ridgline all in one. Then he attaches his hammock to that.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

Would something like this work? I figure by having a strap with an offshoot for the hammock suspension to attach, both the hammock and tarp would drift down the same amount when loaded, and then tensioners at the bottom of the tarp would take up the slack. This could still be optionally detachable with carabiners, etc as well.

Only problem I see is that there would be a LOT of force on that strap that is completely parallel to the ground. I don't know if the standard 1500 lb. break strength webbing would hold up. Just something to consider. I can draw a force diagram and calculate the effective weight on that strap, if you want, but probably not tonight.

Thanks for the diagram that is really helpful. Hopefully I'll be able to test that out. However as meckelangelo is saying balancing out and dealing with the tension could/ will be a problem.

I am not a fan of integrated systems; if one part fails, the entire rig is out of service.

Agreed on the tension problem- but aside from the tension forces changing, I think the concepts would remain the same if the suspension were angled
    10-15 degrees, right?
