    Dog days of summer insulation

Seems like the dog days of summer have already hit here in Virginia. The overnight lows never get below the mid 60s*. When days like this hit, what kind of insulation do you guys reach for? 3 season 30* quilt? Summer quilt? Just a pad? No insulation at all? I'm just curious because I'm thinking of ditching my 30* UQ for just a pad.

1 season quilt. Less to pack, less over-heating.

I haven't seen the 60's* in a long time in Florida.

I use my partial UQ(2/3 synth) until it hits the 70's* and the TQ or fleece blanket is the only other thing that changes. You can use almost any UQ(to some extent) as long as your top is appropriate for the temps expected.

I wouldn't use a 0* UQ at 65* obviously, but, my UQ is used from my personal low of 21* to 70*. If I had other UQ's to choose from, I guess I would, though.

What change once you get above 70?

If car camping a take my sleeping bag (top quilt) and my 30 degree under quilt. cover with the bag and let the breeze cool your back through the hammock, with your under quilt hooked up but next to your hammock, not under it. when it cools down and start to get cold pull the under quilt under you and do what ever you need to with the top quilt to stay at the temp you want. I also leave my under quilt loose to allow heat to escape from the ends. I usually just push it to the end where my feet are. If backpacking I just take the under quilt and make do with no top insulation. I usually don't get chilly, but that isn't to say when the weather does something unexpected you may have to throw on a jacket or something. All this said, if I had the money for a 1 season quilt i would definitely go that direction.

First, below 70*, I use UQ and fleece blanket to ~58*-60*. Below that, I use my TQ instead of fleece.

Above 70*, no UQ (No Underquilt Hang in Ocala, Fl in less than 2 weeks) and fleece blanket. It's a small, lightweight blanket and I cover myself as needed. If it gets a little windy, I can put under me to stop CBS. If too warm, remove and can use under my knees if needed.

I was thinking of getting a fleece sleeping bag liner to use at my top insulation instead of my sleeping bag. From what you described it sounds like it would work quite well. Thank you very much for the feedback.

That's exactly the reason I sewed up my Poncho Liner Under Quilt.. Tweener temps..

Good for cooler temps (50's) open up the ends a bit for warmer temps, and you can always push it out of the way if too warm.

Currently I'm living in my hammock in my friends' backyard here in Austin, TX and I'm only using a UQ to keep the mozzies off my ***. I've rigged two burlap coffee bags with shock cord. I've been a bit warm, but it works! I can't wait for my 2QZQ UQ Protector to come in so I can keep even cooler!
