    Combining underquilts?

What is the going wisdom for combining underquilts on the same rig? With a synthetic 30 degree and a down 30 degree, would the synthetic go against the hammock and the down wrap the whole thing? Is this a good idea to gain some more degrees using what I already have? Any problems with this I am not thinking of?

I've heard some folks say that stacking quilts doesn't work (think quilt vendors). However, I've tried it and don't see an issue. As long as both are properly lofted it's all good.

I stack my HG 20 and 40 degree in the winter( top too) and slept down to single digits. Just requires some fiddling to make sure you are not compressing things.

Never had to use this in the field though.

I combined a 7/8 length and a 3/4 length down quilts, but I did have to modify the suspension of the 3/4 quilt so it wouldn't compress the other quilt. It worked great. Trip report with photos here I would probably go with synthetic next to the body since that would be the source of moisture and also since synthetic is less compressible.

Stacking quilts have worked very well for me. Just make sure that the quilts are not compressed and that they are touching each other. At home fiddling prevents too many issues in the field.

All I do is add a soft shackle or two to the bottom quilt to extend the suspension and keep the down from compressing.
