    Yet another Whoopie sling question...brummel

UPDATE: So I decided to just stitch it this time around.....but with what do I stitch it with? Poly thread (tripled)? mason line? something else?

My order of amsteel came in yesterday and I can't wait to change over my HH suspension.

I have watched the video on the HH to whoopie conversion a bunch of times, and it should be easy.....or that is, I think it should be easy.

After another post I put up about whoopies, I noticed people talking about the locked brummel loop in place of the bury and then stitching through it. (This would be for the loop that would attach to the hammock).

Is what I am thinking correct? Doing the brummel loop (thank you animated knots!) would hold it strong without the added stitching?

    Thanks.

WRONG! The strength is derived from the bury. You MUST have the bury.

The Locked Brummel or stitching are only used to make sure the bury can't back out under no load conditions. One method works as well as the other and there is no need to use both.

Just to add to what gmcttr said, the holding power in the fixed loop come from the constriction of the outer layer on the inner layer as it is in the adjustable loop. That is the reason there is a minumum recommended length of the fixed loop bury so there is enough constriction to hold the buried end.

THANK YOU!!!!!! Thank you very much for clarifying. So I will do the bury then make sure there is enough left for a brummel loop and I am okay to go!

The brummel splice is made first and then the remainder is buried.

Maybe I should have bought my whoopies from someone..........

Just took the suspension off my HH, so here goes nothing....

    Brummel, bury (4 inches?), attach.

    Thanks Bubba for clarifying.

If the brummel is confusing you, I would simply make a loop with enough left over for a bury and then stitch it after making the bury. This method is simple and almost impossible to screw up.

Taper the end of the bury; the taper is important for two reasons. One is that it's easier to work with and more importantly, the result will be stronger because sudden diameter changes create weak points.

Also, make your stitches very loose. They are there just to prevent the bury from falling out under no load. When loaded, the cords in the bury will shift slightly and if the stitches are tight, they can break.

Can't remember the exact specs but for 7/64 amsteel but the total bury length sould be around 5.5 to 6 inches with 1.5 to 2 inches of it being tapered.

I bury eye splices 3 fids (which includes the 1/2 fid taper) and make my whoopie bury 4 fids.
    1 fid = 21 rope diameters.

The video you're looking at is a somewhat confusing way to do it.

In my mind, here's the steps:

    1. Make a whoopie sling. Either use a fixed loop (stitched) as in the video, or a locked brummel like here:

    https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...ummel+pictoral

    2. Here's a pictoral on making whoopie slings:

    https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...=whoopie+sling

    3. Once you've made the whoopies (I suggest a whoopie stopper bead), attach it to the Hennessy like here.

Plenty of YouTube vids on making whoopie slings - the one you're referencing intermingles making whoopie slings while attaching to a Hennessy which is a strange way to do it.
