When i loan something out i do so under the pretense that i may either A) Never get it back or B) It will come back damaged / not in the condition i loaned it.

If i can live with that then i will loan it out. If i can't then i won't. No one will ever take care of your stuff like you would. On the flip side there's not much fun in hoarding your stuff and not enjoying it with others.

    Shyt happens, ask Forest.

I have been fortunate with loans...typically the person ends up making purchases of similar types of gear...paying it forward...sort of.

It's like loaning money - if you take the plunge, do so with the understanding you may never get it back...

I do not loan to my two oldest kids, something always happens to the gear. Last time I loaned my gear it came back soaked in fuel, white gas or something for a camp stove. It finally aired out enough to use, however, I never used it again, it is among my get rid of stuff.

I bring my gear home and clean it, make sure it is dry, when I loan it, well it comes back dirty, filthy and a soggy mass. Nope, I either give the gear away now days or loan out stuff.

1st time I loaned out my tent it came back with a broken strap (on the ground at the entrance - stops the alloy poles springing apart) - easy fix with some webbing.

2nd time I loaned it out, they lost some of my lightweight pegs, but bought me some replacements that were so heavy I assume they were made out of depleted uranium.

3rd time - there has been no third time.

Just remembered that I loaned a tent to someone and never got it back. That's the worst for me since small damages can be repaired but having to replace something sucks.

Dale Gribble: I'm thinking, "new hammock." For me, laying and swaying in a hammock is like a steady morphine drip without the risk of renal failure.

Randy : yea but just remember yer roots and where ya come from....you got Hennessy in yer blood son......

When I loan gear out it's with the clause of you break it you buy it. Probay 75% of the trips I go on I end up loaning gear....have yet to have anything real bad happen.

I'm seeing a pattern here among the hammock loaners. Loan a hammock out and you have to hunt it down to get it back. Haha.
We're like drug dealers...."pssst hey friend want to try out this hammock, ohhh so comfortable, you'll never want to sleep on the ground again. Go ahead climb in, the first nap is free"

Actually I went into the camping trip prepared for some damage. I made sure to loan out my least expensive gear. The kicker is, I bought the Skeeter Beater from A****n a couple months ago for $53. Checked the price last night and they're now $79.

I rarely loan gear, but if I do I make sure its gear I can live without.
