I live in upstate NY with semi rocky soil.

Anyone care to recommend a size and depth of hole? I recently had a tree fall on my hammock while I was in it so I'm a little gun shy. In fact....that's why I'm replacing the current pole. I do have to admit....the 6x6s look HUGE!

Other than having them warp sometimes I have never had an issue with a
8 ft 4x4 post 2 ft in the ground. But this next time around i'm going to use the pressure treated round posts. there 5-6" thick and not expensive.
I prefer the look of them.
Advantage of the 4x4 posts are you can buy post caps for them.
They even make solar lights for the tops that are pretty cheap.

I never thought of getting round posts. I like that idea...easier on the straps too without the sharp corners. Also a little beefier than the 4x4s. Thanks.

just did a quick craigslist search and found a guy local to me who is selling telephone poles cut into 10foot sections. that should work nicely. score

if you can't find any in your area Tractor supply carries 8 foot round fence post in 5in and 6in diameters that would work good.

If you use the poles you could cap them like This

It would help the water run off, and birds wouldn't land on it.
    They are also removable.

i'd go with a treated6x6' and have at least 4foot in the ground....i would'nt bother with cement unless the if soil was too loose to support the timbers upright. if it ended up, two posts i would do the same with 4x4"s and run a steel pipe something that comes in 20' lenght, between the two to resist the inward pull.

i put up a treated 4"x4"x10' - i have a tree on the other end. i was able to get a hole about 30" deep dug with my post hole digger. I did not use cement or concrete - I have pretty hard, clay like soil in my yard. I hard packed it down on all 4 sides of the post with the back of a rake handle and kept packing the soil in. I hung on it yesterday and it was fine although I am not sure if it is going to remain stable over time with rain etc. I guess I will see and if need be, use concrete. What do you think?
