What Ive found in my own backyard is 4x4s work fine as long as you have 5' in the ground. 6x6 are a bit expensive. The orange sales 4x4x16--tis what I used. I also rented a 12" auger to make getting thru the red clay down here in GA a bit easier. I set the post 18' apart and have 10' of post above ground. Happy hanging!

Another reminder to check the post dates. I almost jumped in also.

I'm glad I NEVER do anything like that. I'm also glad I never answer an OP and then find out that there's 3 or more pages of answers that not only were there but were more inciteful than anything I ever did.

But, I thought this forum popped up a little message under the dead letter file that warns, old thread, are you sure you want to post. I saw that somewhere and thought it was here. If not, it should be as that's a great new piece of BBS ware that I hadn't seen before. I thought it was this platform. Maybe it's on one of the motorcycle BBS I check on.

A post is never too old!

For those still thinking about this, I highly recommend the vario stand by Byer.

    http://www.amazon.com/Byer-Maine-Mod.../dp/B00092M27I

I got this for Christmas and have been using it at all my hammock demos and book signing events this year. It's great! It's the only stand I've found that works with gathered-end hammocks, especially BIG ones.

Coincidentally, I don't have trees in my yard either, so this stand comes in handy at home too. I recently purchased a huge hammock from Style Mexican (the super King) and it fits perfectly in the vario stand with room to spare. It's the one hammock my wife loves and will actuall sleep in without being prodded. On our trip to the Unitas last week she insisted I bring this enormous hammock and the stand. She slept in it all week. I was so proud.

Wish they'd list the minimum hang distance. How far apart and high up do the hang points need to be on that hammock? My walls are only so far apart. Also, at minimum hang length what is the minimum height?

That would make things so much easier if the manufacturer would list that info. It would account for stretch n sag a consumer would know if they had the minimum room or how long they'd have to make suspension and how high to set the mounts.

Are you talking about the style Mexican hammock? Just take the total length and reduce it by 80% or so. Use the hammock calculator to figure out hang distance and height. Http://bit.ly/JOGi4j

So is there any general consensus on the thickness of the pole and the depth of the bury. In my backyard I have a tree to 4x4 configuration. The 4x4 has been in the ground for over 17 years that I know about and I am going to replace it. My choices are 4x4, 4x6 or 6x6. I was planning on reinforcing it with concrete. I live in upstate NY with semi rocky soil.

Anyone care to recommend a size and depth of hole? I recently had a tree fall on my hammock while I was in it so I'm a little gun shy. In fact....that's why I'm replacing the current pole. I do have to admit....the 6x6s look HUGE!
