Can a sock be used in replacement for tarp and bug net?

After thinking about which tarp and bug net is the best, I was wondering if a sock could just be used and the others wouldn't be needed to save on weight? This would only be used in the summer. Just curious if anyone has had any experience with this.

This is a very popular question among people new to hammocking. The short answer is no. A waterproof sock would not be breathable and you'd soon be drowning in your own condensation. That doesn't keep people from latching onto the idea - some even try it, but we rarely hear back from those folks.

Hangnout made a Dirigible out of breathable cuben fiber (very expensive material) and regular cuben fiber. Search on that - while it's cool and all, it hasn't exactly taken the hammock world by storm.

A I'm not trying to discourage you but as SlivrSurfr alluded to, it's not the most functional set up out there. A tarp is much more versatile for weather protection IMO especially in conjunction with a hammock. Sitting in your hammock during a storm with the tarp in porch mode is great. You also have nice views, good ventilation, room for two, and room to cook. If you get to camp and its still raining, you have something to set up and get dry and set up under. Just some thoughts.

I do love to go in the sauna, but portable saunas cost a fortune (and aren't that portable). This could be a really good idea for a poor man's portable sauna, though suffocation could be an issue without proper venting!

What do you think of possibly making the bottom portion that can't get you wet out of noseeum and there is ventilation

Hey, there has been lots of times when people said "what if?" Then went out in their backyard and started tinkering and came up with a great solution. Sketch up some ideas post them here and you'll get plenty of feedback I'm sure. Cut up some fabric, sew it together, take pictures, post those and so on.

As mentioned hangnout called his version of this concept a dirigible. Look up that thread. Medicine man who is pretty experienced in hammocks, loved the finished product.

Recently I saw a company selling something like this but I can't remember the name. It was posted here on the forums.

Water's gotta run somewhere and it's gonna run onto the noseeum. Not to mention that the noseeum is just gonna get wet anyway since you'll have no protection from blowing precipitation, so the hammock and UQ will also get wet.

I made this version of a bug net with what DIY Gear called "barely breathable" DWR ripstop. It has noseeum sides and the DWR on the top and ends. The original plan was to add an integrated top like an awning. After testing it out, the condensation is bad, even in Montana where it was quite dry where I was hiking. Nights were cool - in the 40's. This would be a soaker anyplace that had humidity, especially in the deep south.
