I've been wondering for a while, has anyone tried 2 underpads in the super shelter ? Does it bring the thing down below freezing?
It seems to be an economical way to increase the warmth of the SS.

Though I haven't tried it in cold weather yet, I put together a second "pad" using a roll of 2ft wide Reflectix® from one of the home stores for approximately $25 (with plenty left over to make many freezer bag cozies and then some). Menards/Home Depot/Lowes or someplace. Essentially, it is a layer of bubble wrap sandwiched between 2 layers of aluminized plastic.
I took two lengths from the roll of Reflectix® to match my hammock and duct taped them side by side. Then I took a marker and placed the hammock on it to mark where it needed to be trimmed. After trimming with scissors it fits really well between the SS pad and hammock. It works like the mylar space blanket that came with the SS but with additional insulation. As for how cold it can take you, I don't know, but I will be trying it out the coming winter. The articles/forum topics I read where I pirated the idea had good reviews of using it.
My hammock...is MyD0j0!
I use the SS and have been in cold weather down to 20 degree F and just add insulation as a coat or poncho liner and experiance great warmth, SS pad + liner + solar blanket. I think using the insulation you are planning to add would add great warmth and light weight to carry.
Save up another 20$ or so and get you a pancho liner to supplement with as we'll with your current setup and the liner I bet you can get to single digits. Only one way to know!! Try it close to home first of course!
I have not tried this but Dave Canterbury shows how to use a yoga mat and reflex to combat the cold. I am going to try this before purchasing an under quilt.

I have the full SuperShelter....waterproof liner, underpaid and space blanket.
It's a good system. The thing I'm wanting to know is if it is worth $34.95 and 240grams to add a second Hennessy underpad. And whether anyone has tried this for a winter system ?
I am going to try a super shelter with a 20 degree underquilt to see what the bottom end of temperatures I can go this winter.
Sorry I just saw this thread. Yes, it works. My son (HF member Weasel) did this on our last winter hang. Temps dropped down to the teens, and he was having some issues with his HHSS not keeping him warm. It was my first trip using an underquilt, so I'd brought my HHSS as a 'backup' as I knew it would work for me. I loaned him my underpad, which he placed into his HHSS on his existing underpad, and it helped him quite a bit.
Now, with that said, I agree with some of the recommendations you've got from other folks. Rather than spend $35 plus S&H for another underpad, I think you'd get equally good results just throwing a folded fleece blanket on top of the underpad in your HHSS. I've personally used this several times for extra under-insulation. And if you don't need it there, it can double up as top insulation, or as a pillow, or a sit pad, or insulation in your chair. It's more multi-use than an extra underpad would be. A poncho liner, or 'woobie', would be equally as multi-use and effective.
