Hey all, when making a cat cut on a tarp, what are the options for finishing the edge? (I know most people use grosgain, but is there another way?)

FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )
Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either, just leave me alone.

I just fold twice and sew. Never use grosgrain.

I just did a 1/4" hem, no fold.

When you're folding a hem on a cat cut, don't expect to get it perfectly smooth unless you ease the hem in by making little snips (and I do mean little) in the edge of the cut fabric. For a newbie doing 1/2" hems is easier than doing 1/4" hemming. Take a small pair of scissors (thread scissors work well) and make cuts less than the depth of the hem ie. 1/2" hem - snip 3/8". How often you'll need to do them depends entirely on how deep the cat cut is. Start out snipping every 2" or so, decreasing the distance as needed.
As with any new skill, practice on scraps until you get the hang of it. (pun intended)
There is no need to put grosgrain on the edge of a tarp, it only adds weight and will hold water instead of shedding it like sil does.
So even though its a curve, you are able to fold it over and sew it?

How is this possible? 4 replies but noone actually viewed this thread.
Most likely my least favorite part of DIYing my tarp was pinning the cat cuts. But, yes, it can be done.
