    20* PLUQ + synthetic

I currently have a sewn PLUQ, and I'm looking to make a Climashield wrapper for it to be able to take me down to 20 degrees. I've been quite comfortable using the PLUQ with a 20* mummy bag for a top quilt, and shorts and a tee shirt (no socks or hat) down to 47 degrees. Would the 2.5oz CS with a 1.1 nylon shell be enough, or would I need the 5oz? I would look to suspend this beneath the PLUQ.

    Thanks in advance!

Why don't you go all the way and make one from scratch? Pl's are pretty bulky and heavy for the warmth.

I made a DIY 5oz from thru-hiker and I couldn't be happier. Really easy to sew and thru-hiker shipped it out the same day.

I figured that would probably be the response. I wouldn't say I'm a gram weenie, but I may be a space weenie. I ended up grabbing some down at a good price, so I guess I'm just jumping in with both feet to the DIY scene. It can be really addicting...

PLUQ's are great as an inexpensive, low-learning curve DIY item. My first underquilt was a PLUQ, and it did me good for two winters. However, if you're going to make an additional layer anyway, go the whole hog and make an underquilt that will serve you to the 20s all on its own. It'll be lighter and more compressible overall; your back and pack will thank you. Plus, you'll have a spare for friends to try out on warmer trips.

    Hope it helps!
