Super Shelter Question

let me just start off by saying that I love my HH. with that said I do not have much experience sleeping in it during cold weather. I was thinking about ordering the undercover and underpad from HH website. I know its hard to say because there are other factors that will come into play but at what temps would the Super Shelter keep me comfortable using +20 northface sleeping bag. I know that really low temps would require a down underquilt but i am trying to not spend $300 to keep me warm at night. any help with this would be awesome.

I have used the SS down into the single digits with a cheap basty 0* bag. Reports of the super shelter augmented with parkas have the system going down to -26F. When you order it make sure to ask if the kidney and torso pads are available. My understanding is they assist in bringing the temps even lower. I have not had the opportunity to need them yet.

I recently camped into the mid-thirties without using the space blanket (which was dumb) but I was toasty warm all night and expect I could've gone a LOT lower with the space blanket.

Depsite all the rumours and heresay, it's a really good system. Save the quilt money for a holiday instead! I'm leaving the undercover on permenantly now to prevent bug bites, and because it's so easy to store in the snakeskins with the hammock.

Thanks for all the good info. I think when colder temps get closer I will purchase the SS.

I am surprized at how much I like the SS. Two thing that I don't like are;
the pad is kind a pain to get in place get the shock cords to the suspension and getting throught the layers to get in and out.

For the latter I am getting a zipper mod from 2Q & ZQ so it will be a top entry

As far as getting the pad in, my best solution is to leave it in and put the whole mess in the bottom of my pack.

However it is as comfortable as a UQ.

This is my first year in the hammock community and I have a HH and SS. The SS does a good job for the money. In no way a perfect solution but it works.

Wow, that is pretty good with no space B! I don't think I have been able to do quite that well without the SB. No condensation problems? Do you have real low humidity?

I also have not been able to match RRev's temps with the basic system, though I have with a bit of augmentation. It just goes to show that there are plenty of folks even more hot natured than me, or there might have been some other variables involved, as there always are when dealing with cold temps. Maybe y'all had less Wind or humidity or out right moisture, whatever, Or, maybe not. Either way, it is a pretty good system and very good for the price.

Yeah, I was pleased with the temps, but low humidity? Quite the opposite. We retreated after three nights because even stuff we had inside a suitcase, inside a tent was damp! It was some of the heaviest dews I've encountered. As we packed up, we found the bottom of the hammocks were quite wet, so, lesson learned: I'll use the SB from now on
