    Tarp questions????!

This is my first solid week in a hammock.
In doing this I realized several things I don't like.
I have a DIY hammock from the DIY gear supply plans.
My eno pro fly is almost too small for it. I want a larger tarp.
I would like a tarp I could stand under.
Has anyone put 3 pieces of sil together to make a taller tarp when pitched in the style of a winter tarp??

Also why do people use grosgrain instead of bais tape?

I have all diy hammock gear minus the tarp. Just started the hammock adventure last month and got addicted. I use the kelty noah 12 tarp. It has a ton of room. I'm 5'9" and if I hang it high enough on the tree can easily stand under it. My hammock is aprx. 10' long and easily fits under the tarp. It can be hung in winter/storm mode or in a diamond configuration. So if you use the same concept on your DIY tarp I think you got it made. Not the best pics but all I have for the moment. One is in storm mode and the other in the diamond. There are lots of google images and youtube videos of the noah that can help you out.

Newby-ish question here: I see a lot of the hanging pictures show the tarp pretty close to the top of the bug netting. Is this done to get some insulating properties from the tarp itself?

If so, they say you should never hang your hammock higher than you wouldn't mind falling, and if the tarp is that close so it does insulate a little bit, and you still want to be able to stand under the tarp, that hammock is going to be REALLY high up...just food for thought.

Since most hammock tarps don't extend to the ground, wind and wind-blown rain can hit you from the side if the tarp isn't hung low. Also, blowing rain will hit the ground near the hammock and cause mud to splash up on your under quilt if the tarp is high. The low tarp blocks a chilling wind, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it insulation.

Of course, if the weather is hot & dry, you would pitch the tarp high with the sides staked out far from the hammock in "porch" mode. Then the tarp is providing shade while not blocking the cool breeze.

Depends on the application, where are you talking about using grosgrain or bias tape?

The simple answer is bias tape stretches, because it cut on the bias of the fabric, and relatively speaking, grosgrain does not.

I was speaking of bias tape For binding the edges of tarps and projects.

I, and many others, don't use either grosgrain or bias tape. We simply do a rolled hem (fold twice & sew).

3 pieces of Silnylon has been used to make tarps, I think there are several who simply added to the width , leaving no center/ridge line seams..... as for crosgrain versus bias tape, yes bias tape stretches, while crosgrain doesn't stretch as much...That said, most people simply do rolled hems with their tarps....I did both rolled hem on my Ogee tarp and crosgrain edging on my Hex tarp, I can say the rolled hem is easier and simpler than crosgrain edging. At least for me it was...YMMV.

You can simply pitch your tarp higher off the ground to let you stand up.
