I'm not sure how the guy actually used the carb cleaner, but my thought would be to spray it in a container so that you have the liquid. Then you can your q-tips or whatever in to clean the effected areas directly. Sounds like you made the alcohol work pretty well though.

The alcohol did work. Probably not as well as an actual cleaner that would do a better job breaking the crude down. But it got enough off that coupled with a good oiling, things are running smoothly.

    Good advice above, IMO.
I've used brake cleaner and sprayed it into a small container (careful not to get the 'splash' into your eyes! - I usually shield things with a rag or paper towel) or just sprayed some on a paper towel.
I've used Q-tips or a small syringe with the liquid transferred to the container.
The aerosol can pressure is high, and I don't want to 'spray all over' the inside of the machine. I'm also concerned about dulling the finish on the outside.
BTW, work in a well-ventilated area with solvents!

Opie: I don't yet have a Necchi, but my Euro machines are really quiet-running when they are tuned up and lubricated. One thing I look for is easy starting and running on low speed without a lot of humming or fuss - if anything is still sticky, I need to have a bit of a 'lead foot' on the pedal to get it started, and it's time to get back to freeing up the mechanicals.
Another symptom of sticky internals is narrow ZZ or short stitch length at the max adjustments, but that doesn't look to be a problem, looking at your stitch samples.
Nice that you have them both running!

Both of these are quiet too, considering they are all metal. The shuttles on both rattled a bit prior to cleaning, but all is well now.

And apparently the alcohol did a fantastic job of removing ALL the oil. I had to go back on both of them and oil/re oil parts I missed. The zig zag on the white was gummed up and the presser foot shaft on the necchi got stiff.

So far this little guy has gone without a hitch. Whipped up another bridge last nite/this morning. And started on a Tarp using the Argon Sil I worked off in a trade. My first time sewing Sil, too. Stitches beautifully.

Aren't you the guy that couldn't find a sewing machine a couple of weeks ago. Pace yourself.

Yeah. And no place to put one if I did find one.

I need a storage unit. Maybe I can sew up an addition to the shed.

Very cool... Is it a Kenmore? I really like its lines.....
