I've never been to big sur, but the pics look nice. I would be up to somewhere new.

soooooo for a centralized location, it looks like the poll is saying a nat. forrest off the beaten path... helpful

I say forks of the kern would be a great place to hang out! and I live ~7 hours away! that place is an amazing area, and is a nat. forrest, and also right next to it is golden trout! YAY!

    just my 2 pennies

    Great idea for a thread!

I am happy to head wherever the group decides, but am very happy to see some Big Sur responses popping up. I was hoping to see it as a choice later, and when I did, was thrilled.

I know that the National Parks here have had their entrance fees lowered, but I think that'll end before October. I also know our Governator is looking into closing some of our state parks. Maybe we would want to do a "last hurrah hang" in one of the parks listed for closure?

Here is a list to an article about the parks, and within there is a link embedded to a .pdf that has all the possible closures in California.

    San Diego Tribune

Might be a nice themed trip. Thanks again for the thread.

Another possibility - Sespe, in Los Padres NF, southern portion. Hot springs and more hot springs, lots of water, and some really wild country.

man there are even more of us out here than I thought. anywhere in the state that has enough trees for all of us is fine by me. as far as hiking in, what type of distance are we talking? personally, 5-6 miles is about my limit right now, depending on the terrain. I like the idea of multiple night , car camping and then an overnight hike in.

I used to drive down and fish the Sespe River (catch and release) all the time when I was living in Santa Barbara. Actually saw a California Condor there once. The further up the river you'd hike, the more skinny dippers you'd encounter.

something that should be considered, october in the sierras is usually rifle season for deer hunting. just something to think about while determining where we have this. I wouldn't be caught out there without plenty of hi viz orange on!!!

After watching Shug and company on their hang, I would love to get something together in North California. Mt Shasta area would be an awsome back drop. October or late Sept perfect. It was a 110 today in Redding so need to wait until it cools down some. Lassen Park would be another great place with plenty of trails.

plowhorse, you are totally right about the forks of the kern. To get down it its only about a mile and a half of a hike, all downhill, and it is the most beautiful hikes Ive ever done... period.
