    Sewing waxed canvas

So, after watching all the Kenneth Kramm videos, I'm motivated to build a Haversack. Thought of making it out of waxed cotton duck (might be cool...) Lots of patterns on the internet. Is the anyone in the group who has any experience using this material. Tips, pointers?

It's ok to tell me not to to it, between the UQ, TQ, Bridge Hammock,etc... I have way to many DIY projects...😜

When you go to wax it, I find certain mixtures work best for certain items. Staright beeswax will stiffen it up nice, snoseal or thinned beeswax will keep it soft.
Practice on small pieces to figure out what your doing first. It helped me....

Personally I would be wary of using a normal home machine on waxed canvas. I would be concerned the wax could gum up the needle and create some problems under the throat plate as well. Could just be my paranoia talking but it would bother me. A simpler machine (read older non-zigzag) might work better and be easier to clean. Things can get really tight under the throat plate with some of the newer bobbin and feed dog placements.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Very, very cool...I'm impressed... There are such hugely talented people on this forum...

Rev, I plan to use my 15-90 to sew this up... I save the Supernova for the light stuff (although it could most likely handle it )...

I would imagine with any machine, you would need to clean the needle often.... Or just use un- waxed material and wax it after the piece is complete...

Plain canvas would probably be much easier to find and certainly easier to use. If you don't mind doing the waxing afterward this is the route I would go. Any decent gear making machine would be sufficient for plain canvas. Just be aware that waxed canvas is _extremely_ flammable. (Ask Ringling Brothers about this) Be very careful around campfires.

I sew waxed canvas perodically. It is similar to sewing leather in that you can't really pop stitches and restitch and presser feet marks are hard to get rid of. Polish the bottom of your presser feet if possible and try to set your dogs low. All holes tend to remain visible so be vigilant when planning and stitching. Depending on your material build up of wax is annoying, but the orange based cleaners clean it up for me quite nicely on the feet/throat plate. Thread lube is a no no though, it will make a huge mess.
