Mt. Margaret Backcountry Lakes, Mt. St. Helens, WA?

Has anyone tried hammock hiking in the Mt. Margaret backcountry lakes area in the Mt. St. Helens blast zone? Photos look like there are trees, but hard to tell if they are adequate for hammocks. Would love to hear if anyone has tried/had luck there...

    Thanks,
    Dawn

Well, boo. The park service said no to hammocks. They said that camping is only allowed in the designated sites on the designated tent pads, due to the fragile regrowth in the 1980 blast zone. :-(

I've hiked in the area multiple times. There are very strict camping site regulations but even if there weren't, hanging spots would be very few and far between. An alternative would be the Loowit Trail...30 or so miles around the mountain. Hammock would not be ideal there, but it is doable. It would make for a long day through the blast zone. There is no camping allowed there. The blast zone is about 10 miles and closer to 14 between hanging spots. I did it in a tent last year and honestly, at the risk of being banned form the site, would probably do it in a tent if I were to do it again. That being said, it is an amazing hike..

    Enjoy,
    Eric

Thanks for the info. I would have gone for a tent in the Mt Margaret Backcountry Lakes, but there weren't permits available anyhow. We're headed to hike the Sheep Canyon loop and some of the Loowit trail today for the next few days instead.

Another option is Goat Creak Trail head

I have set off from this trail head twice, and could easily do it many times more. It has multiple trails, lots of great scenery, and wonderful hanging. Part of that can be a day-hike through the blasted land in the canyon if you want. You can also hike to Deadman's lake (a popular but trashy camping area, sadly people don't respect it and I've never had the space or gear to haul it all out) and from there hike the ridgeline which gives you wonderful views of the blasted land.

other parts of the trail are rarely used and Vanson Lake is a nice quiet area. It is also perfect for hammockers with terrific areas to hang that a tenter would never use.
