    3 mil plastic tarp?

I remember seeing a thread about making a tarp out of 3 mil plastic painter's drop "cloth" and using Gorilla Tape as reinforcements on the corners and around the holes. It had a lot of pics. I cannot find it anymore. I want to make one as I want to see the stars and still be protected from any untoward things dropping on me in the night….like owl vomit….lol

    Any help?

    Thanks.

I used .7mil in this photo and it lasted one night. I just finished my diy hammock and underquilt and couldn't wait to get out and use them so I rigged this up. It was rather windy the next day and tore in a couple spots. The 3 mil will last much longer. I taped along all 4 edges on one side of the plastic then taped diagonal corner to corner on one side, on the tie outs I added strips of tape to the back side just to reinforce the pressure areas. All in all it worked just fine.

Did you use Gorilla, Duct or Fiberglass tape…..I can't tell. What was your finished size and weight?

I used regular old duct tape. The final size was 9'x12' and it came out at 1lb even. I was born in Colorado Springs and was stationed at Fort Carson during my military days. I can't wait to move back to Colorado. It is way to hot down here in AZ.

I just built a 10X10 out of this plastic. Used regular duct tape and cut it back 30 inches from each side to make a hex design. Only taped the ridge and the sides and made tie-outs out of the duct tape. I hung it up on Saturday in the R&D Lab (back yard) and took it down this morning. It survived two torrential Central PA thunderstorms with no problems. It weighs just about a pound and I fit it and the ridgeline and stakes into an old stuff sack that I had. It doesn't compress down very well (it is thick plastic sheeting) but I was able to roll it up into a cylinder about 5" in diameter and about 9 inches high - not too bad. Is it perfect - no, is it the latest in high-tech-light-weight - no - but it cost $8 to build including buying a new roll of duct tape. I then rolled about 10 feet of extra tape onto an old golf pencil and thew it in the bag for a field repair kit.
