Hammock hangs are where you go into the woods to meet men you've only known on the internet so you can sit around a campfire to swap sewing tips and recipes.

I have only been to 3 group hangs. They were all very enjoyable. The 2 MAHHAs are very well organized (thanks Donna), but most of the time is spent wandering around and talking gear. I also was at one of the infamous 501 hangs and I was told what happens at 501 stays at 501. I can tell you that it is located where the AT crosses Route 501 in PA.

Sarge nailed it. Try meeting some folks who plan on going to a hang at a pub prior to a hang sometime. Should such a situation arise, it's a good idea to plan on some way to identify one another. Just walking up to a guy who seems to be standing around waiting for someone and asking, "Are you here to meet someone from an internet forum that you are planning to spend the weekend in the woods with?", can lead to some awkward looks. (So I've heard. )
We do have a great time. Come join us at the Butt Bake next month and then start thinking about November. (2014 Texas Fall Group Hang Ver 6.0 planning is now underway!)
We have been very welcoming to foreigners in the past, (we've had folks from Fl, MI, NC, LA, OK, AZ) and I see no reason that would change. Come on down!
