"The Ultimate Hang" Portable Hammock Pipe Stand

Hello all. I played around with a couple of different wall anchor options for my forthcoming switch to full-time hanging but I just wasn't happy with where in my bedroom I would have to place them so I decided to go get some 1" galvanzed pipe to build the following stand from Derek Hansen's "The Ultimate Hang":

I would like to have a more concrete method for attaching my suspenision than the wrap method he has illustrated. Is there some kind of shackle or clamp I could place on the pipe that I could use to place my suspension above? Or should I just drill thru the pipe and attach an eye bolt? I'm hoping I don't have to drill thru the pipe. Just not sure I have the skills for that.

Maybe using t joints instead of elbow joints at the upper corners will provide a better point to attach your suspension?

Place a section of inner tube around the pipe before finsl assembly. Then you can wrap your line on or above. The friction of the rubber will keep everything from sliding down.

My suspension slipped when using it with sticky, inner tube on the ridge pole of my turtle dog stand hanging at a 30˚ angle. I weigh 160 making the horizontal load on the inner tube 138.56 lb. Using a pipe clamp didn't help much. Maybe, an 80 lb (for me) downward load on sticky, new(ish) inner tube on the vertical section of pipe won't slip. Any slippage will also place the inward pull further away from the horizontal pipe, bending the horizontal pipe and stressing that joint. Wrapping the suspension around a T instead of an elbow at the top corners will keep the forces in line with the top bar and will keep slippage to zip. Keep it simple. If galvanized pipe joints came in "X" configuration, that would be ideal.

YMMV with inner tube.

I've had slip problems with one end of my stand. I just put several wraps of duct tape under where the strap goes and haven't had a problem since. But if you don't want to wrap, the T at the top will probably be your best option. I'm not sure if you're better to have the tie off portion of the T up or out. I would think the difference would be rather negligible, but maybe someone with more engineering knowledge could weigh in on that.

Edit: The cheapest way to get the pieces you need is buy 10' sections to have cut the threaded to length. Had mine done at Lowe's, first 2 are free then $0.50 each.

I fixed this by adding a short pipe coupling and nipple at the top of each leg. Works like a charm. I'll try to get you a pic soon.

what about maybe one of those outdoor matte spray paints for keeping the suspension from slipping??

How heavy is this setup. I am thinking of doing a stand for times when our scout troop goes camping and I do not have any trees to hang my hammock.
