Britton Peak to Caribou is a very nice section. Also, it is pretty easy to hike one direction on the SHT and then hitch hike back to your car along MN 61. I have done it twice and got picked up quickly both times.

Fellow Mason City-ite! Go to the superior hiking trail assoc. site and become a member. Used to be that membership included the excellent guide book and map pack. Definitely worth a look. Also check the superior shuttle.

Highly recommend Superior Shuttle, new owners, great company to work with. I got a ride from them this spring trying to get my section maint. done over a day hike and when I got to my destination the owner had comped my shuttle due to being a volunteer. Great support from a wonderful company.

Someone mentioned the Angleworm trail. Having been there a few times I like it but in the busy summer it's hard to get a decent spot competing against the canoes. The trail is very nice though and in my opinion a good first overnight for young hikers. I just returned from 4 nights there with my 8 year old(60lbs) son and he loved it (likely because I carried his 10lb pack more than he did

If you want something different head out to Isle Royale. Pretty much guaranteed to see moose and some great scenery.
