Ditto to all that! Hammocks s*ck for all those reasons! Don't even think about trying them, just find yer self some rock/root free, dry, level ground and be happy! If you ain't tough enough anymore, just get a really thick pad. No need to use up the trees, save them for the crazy hammock folks!Being a new hanger that loves seeing new converts "pop up" every day, I also think that we can't have everyone out there in hammocks or tree real estate will become scarce and that'll make ME cranky. I think you are right, Ewker. It certainly applies to me anyway. But that (thinking it don't stink, that is) has nothing to do with hammocks, it applied to me when I was still on the ground! It is just a natural characteristic of being me!that actually would fit a few on here

I'd say it's a result of our unbridled enthusiasm. It reminds me of a kayaking story. In western MD there is an advanced whitewater run called the Upper Youghiogheny. It's been often said that the outhouses at the takeout have little or no odor.....because...as the story goes....if your good enough to run the Upper Yough then apparently your s**t doesn't stink.
I'd say if we're smart enough to give up ground dwelling in favor of hammocking then perhaps the same holds true for us.
In reality I've stopped trying to convert people. Just within my little circle of friends there are five of us competing for the best hammock hanging spots every time we go camping. I liked it better when I was the only one looking for trees.....was the center of attention....and the last to get up in the morning.

Personally I'm not sure why there is a need for hangers to convert people. Are we that insecure with our choices that we need others to follow suit just to confirm that we made the right choice? Are ground dwellers afraid to try hanging but afraid that hangers are actually having more fun? I am both a hanger and a ground dweller. I do which ever suits my fancy at the time. I just returned from an AT hike in Maine where I spent three nights in shelters (and there are those that hate shelters and the people who choose to sleep in them) and eight nights in a tent. Next trip I may take my hammock or not. I find that just having the opportunity to enjoy the wilderness is more important that how I choose to enjoy it.
