Warbonnet XLC vs Dream Hammocks Offerings

    I'm torn. Im 5'11 and around 170lb.

    I've never hung before.

I want a jack of all trades hammock that is also reasonably light but not too light to sacrafice comfort.

    I cant decide.

I'll be using a hammock gear underquilt if this helps.

Please advise. I'm going crackers here.

The good news is that you can't go wrong with either choice. The bad news is you're likely to find equal amounts of people advocating one or the other.

I owned a XLC Blackbird and am currently using a ThunderBird. Both are fabulous hammocks. What swung me in favor of Dream Hammock was fabric/color choices and the fact that I live close enough to Dream Hammock HQ and was afforded an opportunity to visit and try out a few hammocks.

    Good luck.

if you want the most options for your hammock, colors, add-ons etc., it is dream hammock
if you want the best costumer service, dream hammock
now I have 2 warbonnet tarps, so I have dealt with them
I sleep in the thunderbird(I recommend new model once Papasmurf gets it out there) and the darien. the girlfriend liked mine and thought it too big so got her own TB 10' hammock.

I have an XLC but I'm not sure I'd recommend it for you. Like you, I'm also a new hanger and being 6'5" 240lb I decided to go with the bigger XLC. I have only used it a few times, but it has definitely left me wanting, specifically smaller and lighter for backpacking. My fiance has a regular blackbird and I am just as comfortable, if not more in it than my XLC. Plus it is lighter and packs smaller. I can't speak on Dream hammocks since I'm pretty green and have only really messed with warbonnet and eno.

As you gain experience, your wants and desires in gear will be better tailored so the best thing to do is just get one, figure out what you like and don't like, and move on from there.

You most likely can't go wrong with either but I would suggest the regular blackbird over the XLC for your size.

I have/had hammocks from both and I think it ends up being more about having the right combination of materials/layers that's right for you. I slept in the 1.1 dl XLC on my last trip and i slept great. Much better than my original experience with the standard blackbird. I'm 6'1 175. I do see a lighter less bulkier hammock in my future again from DH though.

I have slept in a warbonnet but it was one of the old 1.0 dbl they used to make and I didnt love the feel of the light fabric so I sold it but it was a great hammock and id buy another one but in a heavier fabric but again thats just me. I have a dream hammock danger bird being made as we speak so I will be able to comment on that in a few weeks. But like everyone said It comes down to the things you really want in your hammock and I agree with an above poster that weight wise the xlc isn't necessary unless you just want a bigger hammock
Dale Gribble: I'm thinking, "new hammock." For me, laying and swaying in a hammock is like a steady morphine drip without the risk of renal failure.

Randy : yea but just remember yer roots and where ya come from....you got Hennessy in yer blood son......

I went straight for the thunder bird no regrets, I'm not even interested in WBBB/XLC but it's quality gear I'm sure and I do love my superfly. I would advise 11' whatever you get
