DIY Argon 1.6 / 1.1 RipstopbytheRoll Double Layer Hammocks or JAH

DIY Argon 1.6 / 1.1 RipstopbytheRoll Double Layer Hammocks or JAH
    Just Another Hammock

Whipped together 3 hammocks over the last week or so, two of them are Double Layer 1.6oz Argon / 1.1oz RipstopbytheRoll gathered end, ball whip style hammocks.

The Argon 1.6oz / sq yard fabric is soft, strong and has a non slippery feel. This is the fabric you want on the inside of the hammock for sure, just feels so good. The second layer, and in the case of these hammocks, the inside layer by virtue of their color alone, is the 1.1oz / sq yard from RipstopbytheRoll.com .

The combination of the 1.6 Argon with 1.1 yields a comfortable but firm hammock for hangers over 325 lbs. Having loaned these hammocks out to a few "big" hangers, the feed back is all the same, great feel for a casual or regular use hammock. Lots of comfort with plenty of support and none of the stretch found in the parachute fabric type hammocks. Hangers over 5' 10" and of a stocky build, will find the same limitation of any 60" (59" finished) hammock, getting on a full diagonal will have your head at the edge as well as your feet.

This fabric combination is robust enough for full time camping use with the double layers allowing for the use of a pad when temps warrant. Both fabrics take to the needle well and are easily managed, much more so than say, 1.1oz silnylon. Do not hesitate to make some DIY efforts with either of these fabrics.

IMG_20140801_131651591.jpgThough the fabric takes to the needle well, the craftsmanship is still all about who's driving the thread injector.

These stitches are wandering more than a drunken sailor at their first port of call. We've all got to learn somehow.

Haha! You should see the first few hammocks we knocked out! Sold one or two of them at a discount, but some of them never saw the light of day. We started out on cheap, mis-printed fabric to get our bearings.

Great choice for your fabrics! We now carry Dutch's ARGON 1.6, and it's extremely soft and yet strong. We've also made a number of hammocks from Kyle's 1.1 (which is 20D, not 30D, for anyone wondering), and it's also very nice. He did a very good job of carefully selecting fabrics specifically for hammocks.

Love the pictures! All three of them look great!

What dimensions did you use Ratdog? I am looking at making a hammock as well as an UQ here in the near future if I can get the sewing Machine back up and running this week. Im looking to use the 1.6 OZ HyperD as well

Those look great, Ratdog. I am torn between saving a few bucks by buying a crinkle taffeta table cloth or just buying 4 yards of HyperD. Maybe I should just do both?

RedStix - We've seen a lot of variation in the quality of the Crinkle taffeta tablecloths, so it's kind of a crap shoot. Might get a good one, might get one with thin spots. I've taken them off our website, but folks keep talking us into building "just one more". With the HyperD, you'd be guaranteed top quality fabric.

Thanks for the feedback, PapaSmurf. I have to admit I am somewhat smitten with your hammocks lately and may be optimistically looking at one in the fall or towards Christmas...
