FL state park hammock camp language

I just happened to run across this as I was looking for a campground close to Cumberland Island... apologies if this is discussed elsewhere, but its the first time I've seen this kind of language used to directly address hammock camping on a government site...

Hammock camping is permitted on campsites #36, 37, 41, 57 in the River Campground as well as Youth Camping areas 1-4. Hammock campers must use a 2-inch wide minimum flat web strap to attach hammocks and all other associated lines to trees which are a minimum of 12 inches thick.

This is from the Fort Clinch State Park in Florida at this link...
    http://www.floridastateparks.org/for...ivities.cfm#15

While I'm not excited about the 2" strap limitation and using relatively large trees, I'm ecstatic to see a campground directly address the issue of hammock camping. Makes it better for everyone to know exactly what the rules are, with no phantom rule against hammocks as has often been the case.

I'd be curious to know what other parks are using, if anything, for hammock camping rules?

I can't tell you specifics about this park, but, last year, Florida did a hammock study for hanging in State parks.

After the study concluded, we can hang in State Parks, although the rules haven't been passed down to some of the rangers in some parks.

I believe the standard adopted has been the 1" straps most commonly used.

Come on down to the 5th Annual Florida Hang in January. There should be more than 100 hangers here.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

A 12 inch thick tree has a circumference of about 9 1/2 feet. So you would need at least 12 feet straps probably 15 feet to be functional. In cases like this what do you do? Carry both lengths? What do you do on the AT; carry a selection of straps so you can hang any where. I wanted to use ENO Atlas straps but they are only 9 feet. Should I make my own Atlas style straps in 12 and 15 foot lengths and carry both?

    Buckeye Bill,

I'm not sure what formula you're using for circumference, but your math is off somewhere. Your estimate on tree size seemed way too big, so I double checked the Internets for the circle circumference formula to make sure I wasn't crazy.

    Circumference = pi * diameter (or alternatively 2 * pi * radius)
The diameter (thickness) of the tree is 12 inches.
    12inches * 3.1416 = just shy of 38 inches around.

Ok, I was using C= pi * radius squared but yours sounds betters. I think mine was for area of a circle.

I did get ReadyStraps to make me up some 2" straps in the event it became necessary.
Where will the FL hang be this year?

Doe Lake. Looks like a great venue.
If you prepare for failure you will probably succeed.

i havnt been camping in Fl for years,,,, last time we was there we had a truck camper that had a pop up top and the state park we stopped at for the night wouldnt let us in because we was considered a "tent camper" and they had a no tent policy there ;( so we left and found a private camp and then left Fl for good the next day, NOW that said it was almost 25 years ago so maybe there has been changes i dont know, but i would think a hammock would class as a tent? just askin

Is the site restriction perhaps listed from prior experience, that those are the sites that are good for hammocks, and other sites don't have good trees?
