Save a woodcutter. Keep the bolts exposed. Other than that, long term on your trees no problem.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll forgo the straps unless I'm actually camping.
    There's no excuse for laziness...

but, if you find one, let me know.

    Just for the info...

Straps long term on same tree on same spot will leave a mark, just like a tree growing around a fence or tree stand. That's why heavy traffic in parks will be bad, visually, for the trees.

At home, you can see this happening. If you change the strap location, it will be hard to notice. But, why would you want to do that at home? Go with the eye bolts and remember to reverse a half turn every year to keep the tree from growing over them.

In parks, or any other public place, this is where we like our straps, not just for the trees, but for the rangers that don't know or have rules from above them. It keeps us able to hang with little interference.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

Isn't that dangerous for arborists? If you need you're trees chopped down due to sickness/wind, maybe you should warn them about that (assuming you still have that property).

Eyebolts is a misnomer. What we're talking about here are screw eyes. Most of what you'll find at Homie's, etc are Grade 2, which is pretty soft steel, and the working load limits are not very high.

Also, a screw eye and/or eye bolt's wll is greatest when the strain is in line with the load-bearing (threaded) shaft. For this reason, I would install them at ~30° off of horizontal.

He still has the property, and yeah he shoulda removed them, but they are "his" trees. The pines are plenty healthy for now, so who knows when they'll come down.

Don't bash me but I have 3/8" screw eyes installed in one of my rooms of my house. I set the hammock there once in a while just to hang.

My parents have had a couple eye bolts screwed into some medium sized oak trees since I was a kid. Held us great my whole life. The trees have grown around them a bit but they're still usable and the trees are very healthy.
