I haven't done it, but I understand Dutch offers some hardware you can use in conjunction with spreader bars to hang two hammocks from the same trees, without going bunk style. He doesn't currently have him on his page, but he was showing them to me last time I was there. Can't hurt to shoot him a message!
I've heard you can use his whoopie hooks along with spreader bars for the same task.
This is how I do it. They are actually under 2 tarps, but thats because they are small, and neither is quite big enough, but with a bigger tarp, one would cover all..

each hammock has it's own suspension. 2 trees are used, but each suspension comes off opposite sides of each tree to space them out a bit. 2 spreader bars seperate the hammocks at each end.

Suspension is manipulated to be on the "outside" of each side of the tree to give us a gap.
We were close enough to use the one tarp though it was pretty close on each side. We didn't get wet during the brief evening sprinkle though.

this is ours set up in my yard using three trees total. we went camping this past weekend, and just used two trees total with the straps on the outer sides of the trees, and we were pretty comfy.
Timberrr and I have hung 2 hammocks from 3 trees a few times. We have also used 1 tree and 1 jeep on at least one occasion. It definitely works using three hang points.

I can't seem to find it but I know I've seen a trip report video from Fronkey where he and his GF were hanging side by side.
My girlfriend and I have been doing this pretty successfully for a few years now. We hang from opposite sides of one tree at the foot. Depending on tree size, we use one or two trees for head end. 4' separation at head end seems to be perfect for us. We use a 10x10 tarp but 12x12 or maybe two smaller tarps would give better coverage for seriously bad weather.
