artist, engineer or both? either way thanks.

Now that I have put a few miles in my sewing machine, I can truly see how much goes into this stuff. I am actually looking at clothes and all gear in different ways. I find myself examining all things sewn. I understand that this stuff was not all put together at once, but it is amazing to me just how complex this is. I know fashion is an art and I know painting is an art, but I look at all sewing to be madly artistic and completely engineered.

A true painter is applying layers of paint in a precise order and a shaded perfection. He or she knows when applying the first layer, how it will effect the end product.

An engineer is putting many unintended items together in a balance symmetry. Decisions made to one part could make the project crumble.

I have leaned on so many people thru this site to get to the point where I am at in making gear. Even following instructions takes its on its own need for skills.

Whether its ou supply vendors ( and I do mean our, because they are not only one of use but provide the substance for which we expound), our cottage vendors who customize, create and answer our questions, or whether its the fellow forum member who lends us a hand we are all better for it.

Each piece of gear I make I am realizing the greatness of others and in my own way adding to what I have done. I am not sure I will ever make flawlessly gear or even gear excelled beyond what has already been done. I am utterly confident I can make gear for others and in the process increase my skills. This will only add to my ability to make gear the way I want to.

In this way I think we can all paint. In our own way we lead our lives as the engineer thru which we solve our own problems. It doesnt mean we are Picasso but I think if we apply our collective skills we become a little like Devinchi. I think we make good at combining both.

I am humbled by those before me, I encourage those after me and am thankful to all regardless.

So which are you in your world of diy? Who has ideas they hesitate to build? If you can think it then ask, I guarantee someone will help.

I just started DIY- but then had to stop to figure out the inner workings of the sewing machine. My current (not happening) DIY idea I hesitate to build is this sierra designs quilt... someone braver and more experienced than I can tackle that project!

That looks awesome. I bet it needs to be the right length. That is definitely in my mental pool of ideas for my own. I have not leaped into quilts yet. Mainly because the cost jumps significantly. I also wanted to be good at it when I spent the money to diy one. My next venture is going to be a tarp. maybe next year I will start on quilts.

over the last 6 months I have added gardening, sewing to the list of already odd things I enjoy doing. The gardening started because I enjoy cooking and wish to use fresh herbs and stuff. The sewing started with the purchasing and fixing of 2 machines. My wife also laughs at me. I may soon buy an alpaca and work on my knitting. JK. Mountaingoat hats and gear has nothing to worry about.

Funny thing about the quilting show, I was trying to explain to someone about this forum and the diy gear stuff and she asked me if I wanted to go. I wonder if they have back alley deals with old machines.

I haven't seen anything like it before, DIY or otherwise. I'd love to try it out though!
