There's no excuse for laziness...
but, if you find one, let me know.
Permethrin works. Mix it double strength for added oomph. Works great on insects and cats.
Borax is your friend! Sprinkle straight up or mixed around the tree base or at their nest. You can leave some in and old pop can (Borax bomb) on the ground if you are worried bout pets or kids.
Cornmeal sprinkled around the nest works too - the greedy savages take it home, but can't digest it, and it kills them.
I just saw this guy using a thin layer of petroleum jelly to prevent ants from coming down the straps.
What is Talstar?
Ya, I learned about FIRE ANTS, the hard way. I grew up in Oregon, no Fire Ants, had read about them but had no idea about them. Wow, we were in Florida, stepped out of the vehicle, started heading for the hotel, something red on my bare feet. Waa burn, sting, egad, headed into the ladies room post haste, washed my legs, dumped my supply of perfume on my legs. Awful. That was many years ago, I still wear shoes, when I am someplace those devils might call home. We folks from the Pacific Northwest have no idea what it is like to hike, camp or function outdoors in the East let alone in the Southern States. Snakes in trees were also a new experience!
Fire Ants are the scourge.
I tie a drip line to the suspension lines, then spray the drip line with a little ant spray - works well.
Enjoying the simple things in life -
Own less, live more.
I've unknowingly tied up around trees where in the night the tree is covered with termites. I permethrin my straps as well, but I take some of my duct tape (you do keep some on your water bottles or trekking poles right?) and wrap it around the straps sticky side out.
