    Rock, Climbing Nuts and Hanging

    Hey there!

I've been thinking about hanging, and all the different scenarios people have said they were not able to hang, one of which is up on the summit, but something was eating at me. I mean why not?

So, as someone who doesn't do any official "mountain climbing" (none with gear anyway), I started to look into climbing gear, and how climbers latch onto the walls of rock, to belay or whatnot. Anyway, what I discovered were these things called "Nuts". you just slip them into a crack in the rock and voila! a loop to hang from!

Has anyone used climbing nuts in their excursions to hang from rock, and if so how did you apply them to your hammock or tarp suspension needs?

    Here's an example: http://www.mec.ca/product/5017-917/d...10+50001+50280

    Was this your general idea

Mountain climbers have been sleeping in hanging hammocks and tent like devices from the sides of cliffs for a very long time.

Every once in a while someone comes up with a slight "improvement" on these systems. Also there are may variations and types of anchors used to attach these and other suspension systems to shear rock or cracks in the rock face. A "nut" is one of them.

METOLIUS - S.S. BOLT HANGER for $3.50 is one you can use in your house (wood stud or concrete block), on a tree, post or rock face it all depends on the fastener such as a SS lag screw.

Okay, I admit, I didn't search for this very thoroughly. Thanks!

EDIT: but that thread doesn't discuss how the suspension is attached, which is the main point of my enquiry.

I was only providing the single post I could find that had relevant info.

Depending on their placement, you would use a biner or biner/sling/biner to connect to your suspension.

Looks like you are going to be studying up on rock climbing anchor placement.

Um, yeah, it does, 'cause I have no idea what a sling is. Ha ha!

But the biner definitely makes sense. I was concerned about the nut wire cutting through my line.

    Off to google it... Thanks!!!

P.S. I might have taken the moderator thing a little too seriously yesterday.

    Thanks ntxkayakr,

I think the nuts are more up my alley. Those Metolius things seem to take extra hardware, which I'm not looking to add.

Are slings the same thing as tree straps, they look like it. If not, couldn't I use my tree straps that way?

Slings are closed webbing loops. My thought was that if your nut/anchor placement was in a position that would leave your suspension rubbing against rocks, you might use a sling on the biner first and let it take the abrasion instead of your regular suspension components. You can get creative with this.

I've used nuts in the past but I use tricams now as they are more likely to be the right size for the gap, so you'd only need one or two. I usually only take take them when I'm up in Yorkshire or similar moorland with rocky outcrops.
