    Help with a hammock stand

What would be the best DIY hammock stand for use on a deck?

What is above you? If there is a beam, I would use that to attach a ridgepole (think TDS) and hang my hammock on that. Remove the hammock and the pole can have other uses. The best part is no footprint to get in the way.

How about attaching a 4x4 vertically to one of railposts on the one level part. Then run your hommock between it and the corner of the two level part. You can add plant hangers on it for color.

If that seems too unsteady. Locate the upright even with a footer and tie into it as well

If you're looking for clean stand You could also try a "rabbit ear stand" (search forums for thread discussion) by drilling holes into your deck at 45deg putting in 2 rail posts with eye bolts at the top you could hang in style.

    Ooooooooo, nice looking deck.

I think I'd forget the deck and hang from the corner upright to the tree.

If that Doesn't work, put a few 4x4 uprights up as part of the railing. One on the side and the other along the front railing. These could be the 2 anchor points across the deck corner. The tops of the 4x4 can be connected as well.

    IMHO:
If you want to hang on the open/larger deck area, I would recommend a basic TurtleDogStand. Because you're setting up on deck boards, I would also recommend the use of line at the bottom of the legs to keep them from spreading. My TDSs use a mitered top to keep the legs from spreading but they still try to spread farther when I set up on wood floor.
If you're hanging under the from 2nd floor joists, I like Floridahanger's idea of "permanently" suspending piece of toprail and hang from it - just like you would do with a TDS. You can hang plants, wind chimes and a macramé owl from the rail until you need it.
Or you can forego the rail and just have two cables mounted to the joists at the appropriate distance and length to give you a proper hang. Hang a plant from it and clip a 'biner to it when you need to set up.
Good luck! Send pics when you set it up.
