Though a 70 needle is the smallest I've ever used on anything. My machines stitch fine with 80 needles on sil nylon.

New needle? A bent or burred needle will punch a 'too big' hole in the fabric.

Next on my list would be to check the hook timing.

I'd only consider using a backer for embroidery or wide ZZ - IMO it shouldn't be necessary for straight stitching. There are plenty of 'dressmaking' fabrics that are even finer with less 'body' than silnylon, and folks sew them all the time without backers.

Yes it is a new needle. And I have tried switching to another new one from the pack. I'm hesitant to mess with the timing because it works perfectly on everything else and I don't want to make it worse by accident.

You were right. It was the hook timing. It was off by the tiniest little bit and once I fixed that It stopped skipping stitches when going slow.

Thank you all for your suggestions! I'm very happy it's working now :-)

    Good work!

I got a free Kenmore '100 stitches' machine a couple of weeks ago because the timing was off. Don't know what I'll do with it, but it's fun to make things work again!

Well, I thought it was fixed...but now it just skips stitches when going fast instead. No idea why that's happening so ill probably end up making this project in slow motion.

Just a thought, but have you rechecked your timing? You could have slightly over corrected. Or something wasn't quite tight enough and moved on you. I have heard people talk about machines that don't want to stay timed before.

Oh by the way Mouseskowitz, it did stop skipping after I re-did the timing again. You were right, I must have over corrected. Thanks for suggesting that, I wouldn't have thought to check it again.

When working with silnylon two others tons I've found that help are,
    1. tape the two pieces together with masking tape and sew through. Rip the tape of when done.
    2. Get a walking foot for your sewing machine. It helps by adding "feed dogs" (those metal claw like things that move the cloth) to the foot.

Just an educated guess. Glad it worked!
