Splicing Dutchware Hooks onto whoopie slings?

    Hi

This is my first post to this forum. I've only recently discovered the beauty of hammock camping and am making a transition from ul tents to hammocks, or at least as another option. A few months ago I bought a blackbird XLC and love it, perfect for my 6'4" frame. Now I'm trying to lighten my set up so I can start taking it on longer trips, rather than summer overnighters. After reading this forum, I decided to try dutchware hooks and whoopie slings, replacing the buckles and long straps. However, since it was all foreign to me, and I didn't know what I was doing, I bought them separately. But I want the Dutch hook sliced onto the adjustable loop. In my eagerness (and impatience!), I tried to pull the amsteel cord out, and when it wouldn't come through because of the thick end, I cut off the thick part and pulled it through. Then I slipped on the dutchware hook. However, I've never handled amsteel before and thought I could re-singe the end, like I do with guylines. But....it doesn't melt together like a guyline. And I realized I have no idea how to re-thread it through that chinese finger puzzle section.

    So I'm looking for advice:

    1) what's the best way to re-thread it: do I use a safety pin to re-thread like you would to a drawstring on a swimsuit or sweats?

    2) what's the best way to keep the cut end from unraveling over time or slipping back through? Just tie a knot? Start over with a new whoopie sling?

Hope I explained this clearly. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Look up how to make a whoopie sling, and a back splice for the tail. That's all the info you need. It's easy.

For a fid, just use a strand from a heavy gauge wire.

What boston said. I am using a piece of floral wire bent in half and made a pair of whoopies today. There are many youtube videos showing how to do it. Thread the wire through the amsteel, U end first, starting from the fixed eye. Once it is through, use that to pull the long tail through towards the eye. Then use the same procedure to pull about an inch of the very end of the tail through itself.

On the next one, tie Mason line to the end of the adjustable loop then you can put your dutch hook on then reattach the Mason line and feed it back...

2:20 for how to taper it.
    10:40 for the bury.
He uses a loop turner but you can do it with a thin piece of wire folded over in half.

There are other vids on youtube.
