    Breathable vs non-breathable

OK, I did a search on this and didn't come up with the answer. For a DIY hammock, would there be a major disadvantage of making the whole thing out of a non-breathable (waterproof) fabric? I am looking at inexpensive experimentation, not shaving grams so weight is not a huge issue. I found a killer deal on a waterproof rip-stop of the correct weight. Ultimately, I will buy the "correct" materials when I get my design perfected. However, I will be actually sleeping in it during the trials and experimentation. Will non-breathable material be uncomfortable?

In warmer weather (when a vapor barrier isn't wanted) I would say that it will be uncomfortable.
Try using plastic sheets on your bed to get an idea..
But it may work out fine...an experiment will tell the tale, and if you got a great deal on fabric...
The other thing to keep in mind is that IME the stretch properties (and tear strength) of coated and uncoated fabric are different, so possibly your results from the coated prototype won't transfer well to the uncoated final version.
    YMMV, etc...

If you don't mind waking up in a puddle of sweat, it shouldn't be a problem.

Well, I suppose that would most likely be a problem.

I seem to remember people making hammocks from Cuben fiber and having no problems. I guess it depends on the temperature and the type of sleeper you are.

Personally, I would have a look at eBay for some cheap breathable ripstop and experiment with that. You could also look at DIY Gear Supply - they sell ripstop 2nds that are cheap but suitable for hammocks.

I think Medicine Man had a hammock and integrated tarp made with cuben fiber--the hammock was Breathable Cuben fiber and the tarp waterproof cuben fiber, probably big bucks but very light weight.

That sounds like a post experimentation project unless I win some money ;-)

I think you should go right ahead and experiment.

I would love to see a portable and hikeable bathtub
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you
